Interprofessional Simulation Center

Real-world experience without the real-world risk

Located within the Health Sciences Building, the IU Interprofessional Simulation Center is designed to give learners new opportunities to learn and practice in a setting that emulates a real-world environment. One key learning opportunity is to practice life-like cases as an interprofessional team, learning with, from, and about each other as they approach the simulated patient’s issues.

A collaboration between the IU School of Nursing, IU School of Medicine, and IU Health, the 12,000-square-foot center allows educators to design custom simulations that range from hands-on assessments (using manikins with computer-controlled simulator technology or Standardized Patient actors) to role-playing in a variety of patient and family care scenarios.

The Center features manikins from newborn to adult and includes a birthing manikin. Additional simulators include task trainers that focus on specific skills.

Simulation examples

  • Labor and delivery with “SimMom,” an advanced full-body birthing simulator
  • Clinical examinations and interviews with Standardized Patient (SP) actors, specially trained to emulate a variety of medical situations
  • Rapidly evolving cases that require the healthcare team to work together to remedy the case
  • Cardiopulmonary assessment with “Harvey,” a specialized assessment simulator capable of replicating over 50 cardiac conditions
  • Home health care where learners not only assess the patient but also assess the environment for hazards
  • Debriefing with an interprofessional team to determine the next best course of action
